OUR HISTORY
The Women’s League of Washington College was founded in 1951 by Helen S. Gibson, then First Lady of the College. She saw her new group as a way to build closer ties between the college and its surrounding community of Chestertown, Maryland, the elegant colonial city on the banks of the Chester River.
Since its inception, the Women’s League has been a strong presence in the life of Chestertown, providing both social and civic opportunities to its members.
Congratulations to the winner of the 2026 Women's League Grand Raffle.

Peggi Fisher is a familiar face to locals as a vendor at the Chestertown Saturday Farmers Market, where she runs Our Greek Market. Ms. Fisher won a luxurious package featuring a two-night stay at Chestertown’s historic White Swan Tavern paired with a dining gift card to Watershed Alley.
All proceeds from the raffle support scholarships and other programs at Washington College.
Inspired by the stories of the students and the profound impact the Women's League has had on the Washington College community over the last 75 years, Ms. Fisher surprised the Scholarship Committee by immediately turning her win into a moment of philanthropy.
"I am pleased to kickstart your NEXT scholarship fundraising efforts in the name of my parents, John and Norma Michels," Fisher announced.
The surprise donation, which will be formally made through the Fisher Family Fund, served as the perfect finale for the Women's League's diamond jubilee—proving that the legacy of giving started by Helen Gibson 75 years ago is still going strong in Chestertown today.

Since its founding,
the Women's League has donated more than $510,000 to
